Subject: [*] FileIndexer 1.0
Do you have folders of text files you'd like to be able to search REALLY
fast?

I miss On Location. (It doesn't run reliably under system 7.5).

This is my simplistic attempt to knock up some of the key functionality I
miss.

In a multi-user environment, where you have budget for a server, I
recommend
AppleSearch for indexing your documents. I wanted to have a way to
quickly retrieve
a list of documents on a mounted disk that contain a given word.

FileIndexer trades memory for speed. It builds a sorted list of unique
words
(not case sensitive), and then keeps a list of the files that contain
each word.

Subject: [*] Jade 1.0 -- A JPEG Viewer
Jade 1.0 is a multithreaded JPEG viewer for the Mac which is
relatively lean (370K as a fat binary, and a minimum memory
partition size of 600K) but is extremely fast and sports some
unique features:

Multithreading gives you constant access to all of Jade's features.
Especially useful when used as a helper for a web browser or when
you just want to decompress two images at once.

Through the use of it's own virtual memory scheme, Jade can have
many (around 30+ files at the minimum parition setting) files
simultaneously _regardless of their size_ This is because decompressed
images only occupy around 20K RAM and the actual image is stored on
disk.

Jade can also display JPEG's at their full size or in a small (but
quick!) preview size in addition to the standard screen size. This
coupled with a delete file hot key allows users to sift and filter
through many images with ease.

new stuff:

-- Full Screen, full featured Slide Show
-- GIF bugs fixed
-- PICT file saving is no longer limited by memory
-- New window arrangement options
-- many other minor bug fixes and minor features

Jade is FAT. Requires 68020 (or higher) or PowerPC, Thread Manager or
system 7.5 (or later).
It's also FREE.

Subject: [*] KeyQuencer 1.2.2
Author: Alessandro Levi Montalcini <alm@torino.alpcom.it>Keywords: Macro engine, control panel, utility
Price: $10 shareware, see docs for more info
Source: ftp://ftp.alcom.it/software/mac/LMontalcini

NOTE: (for those of you who are not using KeyQuencer yet)
If you don't use KeyQuencer, you're wasting lots of time;
anything you do with your Mac can be done faster with KQ.

KeyQuencer is a powerful and solid macro engine designed
to use very little memory, which can perform complex tasks
when you press a specific key combination. KeyQuencer uses a
very simple scripting approach and can be extended through
external extensions. The bundled extensions provide lots
of power and can replace many common system additions with
substantial memory savings. KeyQuencer's macros can be
lauched by HyperCard, AppleScript, FileMaker Pro and any
other application that supports sending Apple Events. The
Macro Editor can now execute macros on remote Macs over a
network. Programmers can easily build their own extensions
and integrate them into the KeyQuencer environment, or add
KeyQuencer support to ther applications and extensions.

New in version 1.2.2:
- Third-party software such as Square One 3.0 and OtherMenu
can now obtain a list of all the available macros and use it
to interface with KeyQuencer. Pressing command-shift-return
when no macro is running won't kill the keystroke any longer
(which is good news for FullWrite users). All known bugs have
been fixed, including an incompatibility with the PaperPort
extension, macros hung by some dialogs, problems with the
work-around for Microsoft apps, possible CopyScreen crashes,
SelectWindow problems, and many more. The Control Panel no
longer invokes Apollo actions tied to the power key, and the
Macro Editor doesn't display a "File not open" error when using
the "Save as..." command twice. Please read the enclosed
changes list for more information.

Subject: [*] KeyWack 2.0; for kids
KeyWack is a game for babies who like to sit at their parent's Mac and
bang the keyboard. KeyWack prevents babies from accidentally opening most
programs or documents, and makes banging even more fun by drawing shapes
and playing random sounds as the keys are whacked. This program works with
any Mac (with System 6.0.2 or higher) but looks best on one with color.
The preferences dialog only works on more recent versions of system
software. (Version 7.0 or higher, I think.)

Picks up and expands on Lil'Buddy 1.0. 1.1b1 features the abiity to do
either/both of the following:

1) Open your PPP connection (via MacPPP Scripting Addition)
2) Launch, after opening your PPP connection, any number of
applications/scripts or what not for you. For example, upon opening my PPP
connection, Lil'Buddy launches my Talk Daemon and my Finfer Daemon then
Eudora followed by a script that checks my mail and then filters it.
Lil'Buddy requires that you have AppleScript instaslled on your machine, as
it is a prototype for a forthcoming application. Any and all comments,

From: mbiondi@micronet.it (Mario Biondi)
Subject: [*] Opera FM Database 1.0 Demo
Mario Biondi's Opera Database for FileMaker Pro 2. Vers. 1.0 Demo

This is a sample of the Opera (Operetta, Ballet) Database (Filemaker Pro
2), on which I base my Opera WWW Pages reachable at:

http://joshua.micronet.it/italian/mariobiondi/opere/diz_opera_.html

It is, I repeat, *simply a Demo*, in which you will find the 129 recorded
or broascasted performances I know of operas by two very popular composers:
Mozart and Puccini.

You will discover who sang what and with whom and directed by whom and
when, in which opera Mimi weeps and dies, and in which opera Zerlina shows
her pretty face to a certain villain... and so on.

My real database lists (today, dec. 27, 1995) almost 1150 performances of
475 operas by 170 composers and I update it almost daily.
People who have visited my WWW pages (about 2500 in 8 months) know very
well how rich they are. If you don't know them, visit them now.

I am thinking of distributing my complete FM database on a shareware basis.
I still do not know whether I will distribute it on line or on a floppy
disk. I only know I will ask opera lovers who want it to send me around 25
$ (also payable through credit card or other).

It is a very powerful instrument to study opera performances or at least to
decide *which performance* to buy (in case you do not own already one or
ten). When you will have the database, with all its data, you will be able
to update it with *your* operas, making it even more powerful and useful.

Check out this sample and my WWW pages and decide.
If you think you are interested (but *really interested*, let's not waste
time, which in a way is money), just email me at:

mbiondi@micronet.it

If you are not interested in my complete database, simply enjoy this file,
update it with your data and be my friends.

If enough people will answer, I will put up all the necessary bric-=E0-brac.

My updates (I go on crazily buying operas and recording data on my personal
database) will be regularly posted for you here and in other sites.

The Database interface is very simple and completely searchable.

Let me know. Ciao from Milano, Italy, hometown of La Scala.

From: hyjinx@wjh.harvard.edu (Ross E. Bergman)
Subject: [*] RAM Doubler 1.61 Indicator Patch
This patch is distributed as "gratitude-ware", in gratitude to the many
fine programmers who have produced far more sophisticated freeware and
shareware products for Macintosh users throughout the universe.

This patch will make the activity indicator in version 1.61 of RAM Doubler
active by default. The activity indicator is a small white dot (a single
pixel) in the upper left-hand corner of the screen that blinks when RAM
Doubler is doing its stuff. (Because some Macs, such as powerbooks, have
screens without rounded corners, this indicator might be invisible.) I find
the indicator useful because it aids me in determining why my system is not
running as quickly as I think it should be. With Apple's virtual memory, I
can hear the hard disk spin, and see the hard drive activity light. As
distributed, RAM Doubler provides no such indication of its efforts.

This patch does NOT allow you to increase the "multiplier", i.e. this patch
will not turn RAM Doubler into RAM Quintupler, or the like. I have not
written such a patch, and don't intend to. Please don't send me requests
for information about such a product.

Inquiries about this indicator patch can be sent to its "author", Ross E.
Bergman, at "hyjinx@wjh.harvard.edu".

Subject: [*] Strip Bandit 1.1; a game
Copyright 1995 By Eric Hustvedt, All rights reserved.

What is it and how do I use it?
Strip Bandit is a Control Strip Module which places a slot machine game in
the Control Strip.
The rules are straightforward, to play simply click on Strip Bandit's tile,
you will be charged 1 point per play, and your winnings depend upon the
outcome of the play (standard slot machine procedure).
To install Strip Bandit place it in the Control Strip Modules folder inside
the System Folder and restart your Mac.
To change various preferences that Strip Bandit uses, hold down the command
key while clicking on Strip Bandit's tile and a menu will popup.

Version 1.1 (December 24, 1995)
New Features:
- Added the ability to reduce the amount of space Strip Bandit takes up on
the Control Strip. To access this feature use the Maximize/Minimize menu
item. When the display is minimized you can still access the popup menu,
but you cannot play the game.

Subject: [*] TableCloth 1.1; a spreadsheet to HTML table converter applet
TableCloth is a small AppleScript applet which converts tab-delimited text to
HTML table format; because it converts simple ASCII text, it can convert files
>From a multitude of spreadsheet and database applications. Users of
Microsoft's Excel, Claris' ClarisWorks, Lotus' 1-2-3, and Claris' FileMaker
Pro can all benefit from the easy table generation which TableCloth provides.

TableCloth requires any Mac or PowerMac with AppleScript installed. If you
don't have AppleScript, you can get it as part of Apple's System 7.5 Upgrade
kit, available from Apple (http://www.apple.com).

Additionally, it requires two Scripting Additions from Mark Alldritt's
wonderful "ScriptTools" suite; the necessary files have been included in the
TableCloth package by permission of the author.
Although TableCloth isn't terribly fast, it's much faster and more accurate
than manually creating huge HTML tables.

Enjoy!

From: rkp@nwlink.com (Randall K Petersen)
Subject: 7.5.2/PCI Problems
Greetings.

I recently purchased a PowerWave 604/132 from Power Computing (PCI bus,
running MacOS 7.5.2). While I am awed by the speed of this beast, I am
dismayed by the bewildering number of software conflicts & bugs that have
appeared (upgrading from 7.0.1 on a IIsi). Not entirely surprising, given
the large collection of extensions and older software that I have
accumulated over the last several years. I am gradually working these out,
but would be interested in any hints/suggestions/advice on the following:

Norton Disk Doctor

I've been using Norton Disk Doctor for some time now; the current version
I'm using is 3.1.2. I have found that NDD 3.1.2 will *not* run under this
OS, for me. I've tried reinstalling it, wiping the prefs, turning
extensions off, pretty much all the usual maneuvers. NDD starts up OK, but
when I begin to examine a volume, it crashes hard just after the beginning
of the first phase of the analysis (no error message, just a system
freeze). I've written to Symantec tech support, but so far no response.
Yes, I can use Disk First Aid or MacTools (even NDD 2!), but I really
prefer NDD 3.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions? I know that NDD 3.1.3
exists, although from what I can gather, it seems like a minor update.
Would this function better? If so, I would be glad to upgrade, but have
seen no patch for this, even at Symantec's site on AOL. I'd really prefer
to avoid buying the whole package again, and I don't need the terabyte
volume capacity of NDD 3.2.

Suitcase II

I find this extension/utility very useful, as well. I have the latest
(last?) version 2.1.4p3, and it was rock-solid on my IIsi. On the new
system, it seems to result in some very nasty conflicts and bus errors. I
have heard that it can run on this OS, and have followed all of Symantec's
FAQ suggestions on installing it, etc. I suspect this is an extension
conflict. However, Conflict Catcher (which is generally an excellent
extension manager, btw), can't seem to isolate it. I'd like to get a
dialogue going with someone who is effectively using Suitcase under 7.5.2
to try and work this out on my system.

Personal LaserWriter LS

Yes, I know, this is an ancient non-Postscript LaserWriter. Well, it has
been just fine for my needs. Unfortunately, the LaserWriter LS driver
doesn't work properly under 7.5.2; it prints, but the font spacing and
other details are off. Tech support at Power Computing recommended using
the LaserWriter 300 driver, and this works, but it is *slow*. I don't care
if it takes awhile to print in the background, but spooling to disk takes
much too long (much longer than it did on my lowly IIsi), and I can't
continue with other tasks while this is going on. Does anyone know of a
faster printer driver for the LaserWriter LS, that works on 7.5.2/PCI?

FaxSTF

I have been using version 2.2.3 of this product for awhile with no
problems. Under 7.5.2, I can get it to send faxes, but I have to disable
almost all other system extensions, and even then, I can't adjust the
settings (such as auto answer). I would happily buy a newer fax software
package, but I have noticed that others have had significant problems, even
with current versions of various fax utilities, and I'm not inclined to
purchase something unless I'm reasonably sure it will work. Any
recommendations for fax software that works *well* under 7.5.2? (BTW, will
Global Fax software work with other than Teleport modems?)

Thanks in advance for any assistance. Please email replies to me and I
will definitely post back summaries of advice leading to the successful
resolution of any of these problems.

Some, like the New Jersey group are written "forsale" (nj.forsale) whereas

Subject: [Q] Cross platform encryption
Greetings info-maccers.
My employers are looking for a *commercial* encryption package that will
allow them to send UU-coded binary files securely via the Net. The only
problem appears to be that the files will be generated on a Mac and
received on a PC.

The obvious thing is to transfer the files to the PC and encrypt them there
before transmitting, but if we could encrypt them on the Mac once they are
generated, it would streamline the process a little. So we need a
cross-platform encryption method.

I immediately suggested PGP, but apparently there are difficulties in the
licence for a commercial organisation to use it [this will be in Europe and
possibly further afield].

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance and best wishes for 96.

Subject: CHK error/Word 5.1a
Hi all,

What is a CHK error? I can't find it on any error list I have. When attemping
to open a Word 5.1a document (Word 5.1a is installed on my HD), I repeatedly
get a screen that says "CHK error" & has a restart button that, fortunately,
always works (so far). The error screen shows up with about every 10th Word
doc I try to open--on the average--& only when trying to open a Word doc. I
can't find any pattern, not even in terms of regularity, as the CHK error
shows up with varying frequency. The Word docs are all small, mostly 12k,
none over 24k. All this is happening on my Mac IIci with system 7.5, 8 MB
Ram, & Ram Doubler.

The CHK error has become a real nuisance, as at restart I have to wait for
everything to load & then wait for a desktop rebuild. I do rebuild the
desktop regularly with TechTool 1.0.9, so that's not it.

Thanks to all who have helped me in the past--some by asking questions I
didn't think to ask, & all of you for your Mac wisdom. This is the very best
list on line!!!

Happy new year to all,

Claris put out their v1-v2 updater around Thanksgiving, and it had bugs so it

Subject: Corel All-Movie CD-ROM
Corel All-Movie Guide

Well, it's too late for Christmas, but if you're thinking of buying the
Corel All-Movie Guide on CD-ROM -- think again. IMHO it's distinctly a
bad buy.

The jewel case says it can be run directly from the CD-ROM, although
installing some software on the hard disk will make it run faster. The
Read Me file says you really need to install 13MB of software to make
it run at all. In actual fact it won't run unless you install almost
20MB of software on your hard disk!

The installer is a joke. It gives you two options, easy and custom.
Custom? Sort of. In Corel terms "custom" means you either install
everything -- or you install nothing at all.

The guide itself is a FoxPro application. Now FoxPro is considered to
be one of the fastest DBMSs around, especially on the Mac. So the fact
that the guide feels like cold molasses on my Quadra 605 with a
quad-speed CD-ROM drive is probably due to bad programming (and it's
not PPC-native, either). (As it happens, I own FoxPro/Mac and several
databases I use regularly run quite smoothly.) The CD-ROM drive is not
factor, really: once it took a full minute to close one window, and all
this time it didn't access the CD-ROM even once. It was doing some
intensive work on the hard disk.

And it's not the multimedia either. All the multimedia you'll see are
one or two bad quality QuickTime clips of actors speaking (no movie
excerpts). All information about movies is exclusively textual. So it's
all down to bad programming.

But after all, what can you expect from a company which has no Mac
experience?

2) I am able to access America On-Line using Win95... Uploading/Downloading

I have been told that the problem may be related to some limitation in the

that the Apple COM driver does not support the following functions: RI,

Obviously, I can use the Mac half of my split personality PC for faxing,

There are probably several utilities that do this; I use PPPfloater 1.2,

PPPfloater lets you reset the counter every so many days, or on a specific
day of the month. You can tell it to reset every day, but I don't know
whether it resets at midnight, or simply every 24 hours starting from the
time you close the window. (It doesn't say in the Read Me file.) I would
presume it resets at midnight, though.

Dear "Kzimmerman@state..":

Many thanks for you replay. I assume that you have a name? Small point,
but it is common practice to sign a "e mail" with a name.

You fail to explain exactly why it makes sense to "have a consistent
standard for PC purchasing". Yes, it would make the lives of purchasing
agents easier, in that they wouldn't have to learn about multiple computer
platforms. Please be advised, however that many of us in the private sector
have learned DOS, MAC and UNIX...systems. This is not rocket science. It
may come as something of a shock to the governmental system, but there are
LAN/WAN systems in the world which service DOS, MAC and UNIX machines. And
many tax payers resent employing lazy/"computer-challenged" employees.

Surely a state with "accommodations" ranging from Gov. Weld to our Senior
Senator, MIT to Umass. Dartmouth, Dover to Holyoke can accommodate Mac and
DOS computers???????? Surely we can find and employ purchasing agents who
understand both systems? Surely we need not employ chronic idiots and
establish policy with which they secure their jobs?????????

Why should we have to use the telephone to "glean" the DPGS decision making
process? Surely there is a spare megabyte or 2 for the details available
on a Commonwealth server?

my original message:

Are there any other municipal DP or Systems Managers out there using
Macintoshes?

The state of Massachusetts is telling us to standardize on Intel Pentiums for
the desktop.

Why was Apple not included? Does this leave us towns using Macs out in the
cold, needing to do major overhauls.

I was planning to ramp up some of our Mac base next fiscal year with a
PowerShare server, more on our 4D Server, and other Mac products.

please note the web address:

This is where the full set of Mass. standards will be available.

Oh, what to do!?

Where was Apple when these decisions were being made?

Subject: Netscape/ trashing unwanted cache files
Hi All,

A couple of weeks ago there were responses--pro & con--to a question about
NetScape caching. I can understand how caching significantly speeds up
performance on those pages returned to regularly. On the other hand, I would
prefer to trash cache files for sites to which I will *never* return. It's
very easy to collect lots of those surfing around. I do have a 1 GB HD, so
it's not a question of HD real estate. I just don't like the clutter of
useless files of any kind. Is there any way to trash Netscape cache files for
selected sites?

All assistance much appreciated.

TIA & happy new year,
Toby Moore

Subject: Now menus replacement recommendation please
On 12/21, I posted a message requesting advice regarding a replacement for
Now Menus. With version 5.0.2, I get a system freeze every time I change my
volume setting for any program in a custom menu.

I have received several responses, none of which recommended one program
which could permit me to launch a program with preset sound and monitor
settings. I guess I will have to stick with Now Menus for now, it seems to
be the only one out there that can do the trick, even with the bug.

I traced the bug further but using Now StartupManager to disable all inits
& cdevs except for NowMenus 5.0.2, Sound Manager 3.1 and Sound extention
8.0.5 - the system freezes every time I change my volume setting for any
program in a custom menu with this small set (or a larger set).

To all who responded, thank you very much for the advice.

Subject: Origin of "sumex-aim"
Over the last few issues, some people have proposed hypotheses for the
origin of the name "sumex-aim", centering around its use as a
Macintosh software archive site. While the answers sure seem
plausable, I remember this discussion going around two or three years
ago, and the answers, I think, were very different. Wasn't the origin
of "sumex-aim" mostly from the location of the machine as some part of
Stanford's medical school and facilities? Someone have a definitive
answer on this little piece of trivia?

Subject: programmer's box in Eudora
Just after I launch Eudora, the programmer's box pops up if I use any key
command combinations. The problem does not occur using menu commands and
doesn't occur after I've been using the program awhile and start to use the
command key. Since I don't want to tempt fate, I try to use menu commands
until I forget I'm not supposed to so I don't know exactly how many
keystrokes or menu command selections it takes before It's "safe" to use
the command key combinations again.

This happens no matter what key combination I use (command M, command W-it
doesn't matter).

This happened before when I used Eudora Light and continues now that I use
Eudora Pro 2.1.3.

Is there a way to stop this? Is there a way to make the programmer's box
leave the screen without restarting (which is what I always do)?

I'm using a PowerMac 6200/75 32/500. It's running System 7.5.1.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

This weekend I tried to install RamDoubler on an accellerated Mac Plus.
Upon running the installer, I got a message that said something like:

"RamDoubler cannot be run on an accellerated Plus, SE, or Classic"
Kind of depressing, hmm? Didn't leave much room there for interpretation.

If you heaar of a workaround, would you let me know? Thanks.

Subject: System 7.5.2 inactivity
For the Mac 5300cs PowerPC Powerbook: The system 7.5.2 (with no programs
open), manytimes does not respond to mouse clicks as if it is doing
something else and does not become free sometimes for ten or more seconds.
This always happens when clicking the control strip modules. After clicking
the control strip modules the menus also do not respond to mouse clicks for
5 to 10 seconds and then all the clicks activate one after another as saved
up.
I have reinstalled a new system 7.5.2 with NO extras, control
panels, extensions etc etc, yet it still does this.

Additionally, when opening programs, quitting programs or copying files,
and other similar system activities etc it seems to take a long time and
appears that the system has stopped at times. Clicking the mouse seems to
wake up the system and it continues at a faster rate. (Perhaps this is
deceptive as the system may only update its processing on the screen when
clicked, but it does not appear to be this) When the mouse is clicked
continuously the system does not stop functioning, but when the mouse is
not clicked the activities slow way down and stop. Additionally when
transferring email to or from my server the SD light on my modem stops
blinking unless I click my mouse (this is even so sometimes when a
RD-receive data light indicates that data should be sent). This indicates
that the system is not responding immediately or even at all as it should.
Can anyone give any clues as to what is the cause and solution for this
problem?

I have checked for system sleep functions and the like. All that I am aware
of is under the *Powerbook control panel*: minutes until system sleep, hard
disk spin down and screen dims. These are set appropriately at high values
for when the computer is plugged in. I have no third party addons to
further control these types of parameters.

There doesn't seem to be any other control available. This function of
system sleep etc was suggested as a possible cause of my problem. It does
seem that the system just stops or is spaced out so to speak for no
apparent reason. Perhaps there is a hardware problem?

Any help in this matter is very much appreciated.

Also, if anyone can supply a specific email address within Apple of someone
who would be able to address this problem with the 5300 PowerPC I would be
grateful.

Thank you

Subject: Teleport Platinum V problems
I am having problems with the Teleport Platinum V internal modem in a
Performa 6300CD.

The modem appears to be losing and/or garbling characters during both text
and zmodem transfers and is generally unreliable when the DTE speed is
greater than 9600 baud. I have hooked up a couple of different external
modems via the printer port and they have worked flawlessly at full speed
(Hayes Accura 144 and Supra 288).

I have turned off AppleTalk without experiencing any improvement.

Are you aware of any software diagnostic aids that I can use to diagnose the
problem and/or determine whether the problems are with the modem and/or
computer?

Has anyone else here experienced any problems with the Teleport Platinum V
internal modem.

Thanks.

Monty

The resource error which terminates the updating process for Clariworks

I had the error message on my Quadra 660AV (OS 7.1 update 3.0), but when I
tried it on my Performa 6214 (with its 7.5 operating system), it worked fine.

Based on the two experiences, when the error occurs, it is early in the
process, so no updating of anything takes place.

Subject: Using Syquest on PC Network
I want to use my Syquest 200 MB drive on an IBM compatible PC network
running NOVELL net. I can't use Syquest Technologies SCSI.EXE suite of
programs and drivers because I can not modify any autoexec.bat or config.sys
files on the network for fear of crashing/locking the system. What I'm
looking for is an application that would let me read the PC formatted syquest
disk that I can create using APPLE PC exchange on my MAC.
Another option that I have would be to use an external PCMCIA SCSI reader on
my MAC to transfer files to the PC network which DOES have PC card reader/
writers. The only source that I have found for these is from a company
called Envoy data products (602)892-0954 which sells the MAC PC
reader/writers STARTING at $600.00. The PC cards by the way are being used
with/for a KODAK DCS 420 Digital camera.
The only OTHER way out that I could think of might be to get an IOMEGA Zip
drive. It is my understanding that these drives have software that can make
them have a TEMPORARY drive assignment on a PC compatible that you could read
>From and write to.
Does anyone have experience in these areas or can anyone make a
recommendation? Please respond through this forum or to my below address.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Eudora mailboxes are TEXT files (with creator CSOm), so any text editor
can open it.

Find one which letx you extract all the lines containing "From: " at the
beginning. I suppose this can be done with BBEdit and Nisus (but I don't
have any self-experience).

Good luck, Christian.
